Legend Editor
Open the Legend Editor :
- from menu : Dataset > Legend Editor…
- from menu : Dataset > Dataset Properties… > Legend and Labeling
- right-click menu in the Dataset List : right-click dataset > Legend Editor…
- The top indicates a Model choice.
- The Legend Editor has 5 sub-tabs : General Settings, Basic Appearance, Classification, Labeling and Pie Chart.
- At the bottom, you can use the apply button to apply the edited legend to the selected dataset an refresh the map view using the edited legend.

| New | Clear the legend specification to start creating a new legend from scratch. Does not save ! |
| Open … | Open a legend file by selecting a legend file from your file system. The legend file is read, presented in the editor and automatically applied to the selected dataset. Press apply to see the new legend in the map view. Warning: be sure the selected legend file is compatible with the dataset. |
| Save | Save the legend in the current file. |
| Save As … | Save the legend in a new file. Click Yes to apply the legend before saving, select the directory and enter file name to save the legend file. |
| Undo | Revert legend settings to last saved version. |
Tip
- To link a legend as default legend to a dataset, save it in the same directory using the file name of the dataset without file extension, replacing the file extension with “.olg”.

Model Choice
This drop down list contains all Model names of the dataset. (see Dataset Structure Contents, Understanding Orbit Datastructures).
When a Model is chosen, the spatial component of the is displayed nest to it. This type determines the graphic parameters to set in the different tabs of the Legend Editor.

Classification
Labeling
- The most easy way to create a graphic representation of an attribute, is using it's value as a label on the map view. For example an attribute containing the street name, or a city name.
- Orbit GIS allows to define a single label per model.
- The labeling tab provides a wide range of possibilities to edit the graphic appearance of the label (font, style, transparency, orientation, positioning, halo and shadow).
