Resource Browser

Open the Resource Browser

• from toolbar :
• from menu : File > Open DataSet….
• from menu : Datasets > Open DataSet…
• with short-keys : Ctrl + Shift-O

Open the Resource Browser to find and select resources and to add the selected resource to the current workspace (map view). There is access to local files or resources served on a corporate (EOS) or internet-based (IOS, WMS) server system.

Left side

The left side shows a tree view of all accessible resource storage locations. See selecting a resource location.

• Workspace: the datasets of the workspace, shown in the Dataset Lists
• Local Filesystem: look for data on local drives or network drives
• EOS: connect with data on an EOS server
• WMS: connect with data on an WMS server
• Favorites: open your favorite folders and datasets
• Recently Used: open a dataset that recently is used in Orbit GIS

Right side

A table showing the resources available in the resource location shown at the left side. Use the 'Supported Formats' flag to restrict the listing to resources that are supported by Orbit. Check here for a list of supported storage formats.

• Add to Workspace
• Remove from Workspace
• Add to Favorites
• Remove from Favorites
• Refresh resources : Refresh the folder or remote server contents in the resource list.
• : List only the supported storage formats, or show all the files on the selected location. Only supported file formats can be added to the workspace.

• Select a resource location using the left hand tree.
• Select a resource in the right hand table.
• Add the selected resource to the current workspace by double-clicking the resource, right-click “add to workspace”, or pressing the “add to workspace” button.
  
• After adding spatial data to the workspace, switch to the workspace map view and tick the dataset on to view its content.

• The Associated Legend File
  If there exist a legend file using the same filename as the selected resource, the legend file is loaded automatically simultaneous and used with the dataset. If not, Orbit GIS presents a default view and there is the possibility to create or select a legend using the legend editor.

• The Resource Descriptor File
  Orbit resources can be extended with a set of properties. These properties are stored in a Resource Descriptor file that has the same name as the resource but with a *.ord extension. When opening a resource, the resource descriptor information is loaded automatically. See Resource Descriptor information.

• Simply browse through your file system
  Click on a folder in the resource tree on the left side. The right hand side of the window shows the contents of that folder. You can show all files, or restrict the listing to only those files that are supported by your current Orbit GIS installation.
• Add File Resource manually
  Use the Manual option in the Local tree node to type in path and filename. This allows to connect to remote file systems not mounted as a local drive
• Refreshing local folder list
  After connecting or disconnecting a network drive, the local folder list can be refreshed using the right-click menu on the 'local' tree node.

Orbit Explorer is based on the Orbit Spatial Toolkit. The toolkit allows dynamic geofusion and can combine local, corporate and web-based resources in a single view. To access corporate resources, Orbit Explorer uses EOS.

What is EOS ?
EOS stands for Enterprise Orbit Server, an enterprise server system for central storage and maintenance of spatial resources. Using EOS, your Orbit Explorer instantly becomes a client/server application, providing access to corporate resources.

Adding an EOS Server

Accessing EOS Corporate Resources

1. Open the Resource Browser.
2. Click on the EOS button
3. Select the EOS Server in the resource tree. Al resources served by EOS will appear in the resource list.
4. Just select a resource and add it to your workspace.

Web Map Services are (internet) servers which provides raster maps.

Adding a WMS Server
Right-click WMS and choose “add”.

Accessing WMS Web Corporate Resources

1. Click on the Web button.
2. Enter a free service name and the url of the webserver.
3. If the connection is successful, the service contents will appear in the resource tree.
4. Just select a resource and add it to your workspace.

The Resource Browser allows you to mark both resource locations as single resources as your favorites.

• Adding Resource Locations
  Use the right-click context menu on the resource location tree branch or the button to add that resource location to your favorites.
• Adding Single Resources
  Select the resource in the list and use the button to add it to your favorites list.
• Favorites listing
  You can retrieve your favorites using the Favorites branch in the resource location tree. You can either select a resource, or use the button to remove the resource of resource location from your favorites.

The Resource Browser keeps track of the recently accessed resources for fast retrieval. It keeps track of the 15 last resources and lists them alphabetically.
