About IOS

What is IOS ?

IOS stands for Internet Orbit Server, an extension to EOS for publishing spatial data on the web using web standards such as http. XML and the OGC WMS/WFS specifications. IOS extends EOS with internet enabling facilites, such as a built in limited capabilities webserver, and the Orbit FlashMap® viewing and publishing system.

You can use a single IOS system as both corporate server and internet server. Edits executed in Orbit GIS connected to EOS are instantly visible on the internet via the IOS extension. Remote connection from Orbit GIS to EOS/IOS is a standard functionality.

Some Features

The IOS system is an extension of EOS, and thus contains all EOS features. Check on-line for the latest developments.

Restricted User Access

Since IOS is intended for internet use, it includes an option to restrict access to datasets. This restriction is of course controlled by the EOS/IOS administrator.

Firewall safety

IOS communicates with an Orbit client such as Orbit GIS using a single configurable port on your firewall, allowing your organization to maintain maximum security (unlike other systems using standard Java requiring 20 or more ports to be opened).

When publishing on the internet, IOS uses the standard http ports.

Web Mapping

IOS comes with Orbit FlashMap® sample solutions for web mapping based on Flash® - sample and reusable components are included. IOS supports the OCG WMS protocol for communication.

Tuning and embedding

IOS is very easy to embed in your website and is designed for webdevelopers. It comes with several tools to add intelligence to your maps.

Where can I find IOS servers running ?

Any company or organization can set up an IOS server. The server administrator requires to communicate the IOS server URL to you.
