Superimposing Orbit GIS Vector Data

Viewing vector data is commonly available for every Stereo Viewer.

How to View Vector Data?

To be able to view vector data you must first open and view the dataset containing the vector data, inside the 'Orbit GIS' application.
See the Orbit GIS documentation on how to open and manipulate datasets.

Although it is possible in Orbit GIS to view image files (e.g. orthos) together with vector datasets, only the vector datasets will be superimposed on the imagery in the Stereo Viewer.

A typical setup of Orbit GIS and Strabo :

Make the vector data visible in the Stereo Viewer.

The vector datasets are also visible in the Stereo Viewer at the left side of the dialog.
To make them viewable follow the next steps:

  1. Select the datasets you want to superimpose on the stereo image by clicking the small icon to the left of the datasetname.
    This will immediately show the dataset superimposed on the stereo image.
  2. The used dataset legend is the same as the legend used in the Orbit GIS application, and can be adapted there.
    Changes to the legend will automatically be applied in the Stereo Viewer.
  3. You are free to set this 'superimpose-flag' to different datasets than those that are set visible in the Orbit GIS application.

Vector datasets with only X and Y Coordinates:

It is clear that the datasets that you want to superimpose need a correct Z value for each point to coincide with the expected image detail.

Obviously there exist a lot of datasets that contain only X and Y coordinates.

Therefore Strabo gives you the opportunity to superimpose those XY datasets by applying a certain Z value to a dataset.

Follow the next steps:

  1. Use the right mouse button and press on the datasetname of which you want to apply a Z value and
  2. select the 'Dataset Properties…' button on the submenu:

  3. the next dialog will be displayed headed 'DataSet properties: …'



    The title 'Dataset properties:“ shows also the selected dataset on which you want to apply changes to the Z coordinate.
  4. There are three ways to adapt the Z value for all the points in the selected dataset:
    1. Use objects Z-Value:
      • Select this option to use the original Z values of the points in the dataset for the superimposition on the stereo image.
      • If there is no Z value available in the dataset then the dataset will be superimposed as if all points had Z value equal to zero.
    2. Use Fixed Height for all Objects:
      1. You can either type in a value manually,
      2. or you can press the button next to it 'Get Floating Mark' to fill in automatically the Z value of the floating mark.
        This is an easy way to project a dataset on a certain height.
        Each point in the dataset will be projected as if it had the same Z value.
    3. Adjust Z value of objects with:
      1. the value that you enter here will be added to the Z value of each object in the dataset.
        If the points in the dataset have different Z values, this option lets you translate the dataset visually to another height by entering the desired translation distance in Z.
  5. After selecting the required options and filling in the desired values you must press one of the next buttons:
    1. Press 'Apply' to apply the requested change in Z for the dataset during the superimposition according to the selected option.
      • The dialog will not disappear from the screen and stays ready for use.
    2. Pressing 'Ok' will do the same as 'Apply' but the dialog will also disappear from the screen.

Important Remark

  • The dataset coordinate values are never changed themselves.
    The requested changes for the Z coordinate are kept per dataset and are only used while superimposing the datasets.
