Toolbox : Convert Image

How to convert an image

This tool can be used to convert the storage format of Image datasets.

Three parameters have to be determined

  • The location of the source file
  • The location and name of the converted image file
  • The new image format

The “browse” button helps to locate a image file in the file system

  • Click on the button to open the window below
  • Navigate in the file system with the appropriate buttons

Possible conversions

Orbit supports the conversion to various image formats. One can find and select them in the image Format box.

These can be divided in two categories

  • common image formats (e.g. jpg, tif, etc)
  • Orbit related image formats (e.g. omi and oif)

When an image format is selected, the destination location and the name of the image file will be set identically as those of the original file. Only the format will be different.
One can edit the destination path and name either with the “browse” button, or by manually editing.

According to the chosen format, one can set a few parameters that are related with the conversion.

  • BMP, WBMP

Choose the number of bits that one pixel can use.

  • ECW, JP2

Choose between a gray image or a coloured one. Determine also the compression factor.

  • ERS, FLT, JPEG, PNG, RST

Orbit use the standard conversions, there are no options.

  • GIF

One can select the way the image is showed. With or without interlacing.

  • JPG

Select the quality of the created image.

  • OIF, OMI, TIFF

choose the pixelsize and the compression. Extra parameters are applicable for grey images.

Example

The example below shows the storage options for the OMI format, Orbit's portable multiresolution format. Press the Go! button at the bottom to run the conversion. When finished, the word 'Done' appears in the progress bar.
