Publish to the Web

What can I Publish ?

Use this menu function to export the Workspace ready to be published to the web using Orbit FlashMap®

What Resources can be published ?

The Orbit FlashMap web solution is based on an EOS server with IOS web extensions. Orbit GIS can connect to that same EOS server. The workspace you create with resources from that EOS server can be published to the web; local resources or resources from other servers cannot be published within the same project.

What to Publish ?

The Publish to the Web function creates a configuration file for Orbit FlashMap. In includes the list of datasets opened in your workspace, and specifies the currently visible datasets as startup layers. In the wizard steps, you can specify resources to be liked to a behaviour that is standard available in Orbit FlashMap, such as a dataset for object selection, for maptip display, for hyperlink execution.

How to Publish ?

Prepare a Workspace with resources exclusively from your web-enabled EOS server (EOS / IOS / FlashMap installation). Make up a list of datasets, and switch on the datasets you wish to see a startup on the web. Then run the menu option and follow the steps of the wizard (see below).

The wizard will save a configuration file that Orbit FlashMap needs to startup. Place this file in the same webserver folder as the Orbit FlashMap component. Then try and run Orbit FlashMap.

Publishing to the Web - Wizard

Step 1 : Prepare

Prepare your workspace with the proper resources from the EOS server you wish to publish data from. Set the resources in the right sequence and switch on the resources you wish to have visible at startup of your webpage.

Step 2 : Preferences

Set preferences for some standard features of Orbit FlashMap®.

  • Choose a selectable dataset
Select a dataset from which the user can select an object and view it's properties.
  • Choose a maptip dataset
Select a dataset that has a maptip defined.
  • Choose a hyperlink attribute
Select an attribute from a dataset that has a hyperlink defined.

If more than one hyperlink is defined, choose the hyperlink that will be executable from within Orbit FlashMap. You can only choose one. Note that the hyperlink attribute value should be fully recognisable by your web browser. The reference and sample implementations of Orbit FlashMap provide these features. Decide here for which datasets these features must function, if desired. Note that some samples implement only part of these features.

Step 3 : Save

  • Copyright
Enter message and hyperlink (optional) for data copyright display in Orbit FlashMap. This display will be visible in the lower left corner of the map view in Orbit FlashMap.
  • Scales
Enter the scale range for the Orbit FlashMap zoom slider functionality.
  • IOS Server URL
Specify the URL of your IOS Server. This URL will be accessed by Orbit FlashMap and must be accessible from any browser. The URL must be complete, such as 'http://www.myserver.com:90/ios?'. If you access IOS directly from the web (in contrast with a plugin on your webserver), you must provide the right portnumber and request prefix such as '90/ios?'. The portnumber is set in your IOS configurations.
  • Save
    Save this Orbit FlashMap configuration.

Step 4 : Next

Put the Orbit FlashMap in the same folder as the Orbit FlashMap component and make them accessible from your website, e.g. by referring to a html file containing the Orbit FlashMap component, or by generating such html page dynamically by your web application.

Check the Orbit FlashMap manuals for more details on where to go next.
