Print View
Orbit GIS includes a simple but effective printing function. It simply duplicates your view onto your printer of choice. If you experience any problem with printing, check here.
Print Function
Select the menu File→Print View… function or click on the print icon 1). The 3-step Print wizard appears.
Print Procedure Step 1
Title
Enter a Title for the print. If you use a template (see below), a Title field must be provided in the template. If you use a standard printout, the Title field appears on top of the printout.
Highlight
Highlight the selected objects on print : include the highlighting of selected objects on screen also on your printout.
Scale
Specify the printout scale :
| Use the current scale | will print using the current scale and fill the printable area as good as possible. Center of screen will be tied to the center of the printable area on the printout. |
| Use a scale that prints the visible area | Will adjust the scale to make the currently visible area in you map view fit to the printable area on the printout. |
| Print on scale 1/ … | Type in the scale for your printout. Printed area will be adjusted as for the first option. |
Print Procedure Step 2
Printer
Choose your output device. All printers known to you operating system appear in the list. After selection of the printer, page size and other options are set according to the chosen device.
Page button
Open the standard Page Setup dialog, which may be printer specific.
Page Size
Choose one of the page sizes supported by our printer
Template
You can use templates to define a preferred print page layout. Templates are created using the Template Editor, an optional extension to Orbit GIS.
According to the size, Orbit will load the available templates from the templates directory. You can choose one, or set '-none-' to get a default template.
Orientation
When no template is chosen, set the orientation for your default printout.
Margins
In case the Page Setup dialog does not allow to set the margins, use this button to set them.

Preview
Get a preview of your printed map. You can zoom in and out to check. If you're not happy with the result, close the preview (
) adjust your print settings and/or map view and try again. You can also go one step back and alter the page or template properties.
Note : the grey lines indicate margin areas as specified in the Page Setup. They do not appear on your paper printout.
System and Print Dialog
Both options are used for specific situations in which printers show problematic behavior. Printing depends mainly on the quality of the supplied printer drivers and this quality may differ dramatically. In Orbit GIS, we've provided all different printing techniques available in the Java platform allowing to finetune the printing method required for a specific device.
In most cases, just leave these options set to 'standard'.
Opens the standard Print dialog. In general, since all parameters have been set, just click OK to start printing. You can monitor the printing process in the progress bar. Wait until printing is finished before continuing.
When printing, Orbit will generate a map drawing as detailed as specified by the printer settings and capabilities. This may lead to very large print files.
For example : if you print an image on an A0 or E-size printer, using a resolution of 300 dpi, this will generate hundreds of megabytes of data as Orbit always prints in raster format. Be sure your computer, network and printer settings are capable of printing such large files. If not, reduce the paper size or resolution setting of your printer before issuing the Print command.

Printer & large media plotter manufacturers can give advise on how to optimize handling of large print files.
Check with them how to tune your systems. Orbit GIS will behave accordingly.
