Choosing which appearance to be conditional

Once you specify which attribute should define a conditional appearance, you should select which appearance or graphic parameter it should modify.

This list contains all individual and grouped parameters that can be modified by a classification. The list is of course according to the spatial type of the Model.

Tip: In most situations, you probably wish to classify by color, line type, or symbol choice.
Be sure to set the general appearance first using the Simple Editor, then classify the proper Graphic Parameter only : do choose e.g. 'Parameter : Outline.Color' instead of 'All Parameters'.

Making Classes

You can classify by creating a range of classes or by creating a class per unique value. Choose one of the options, and set the amount of classes in case you choose the 'classes' option. The table below will be filled with the amount of classes you specified, or with all unique values of the attribute.

Classes

Distribute all values of the attribute field into a number of ranges. Select how many ranges you wish to have.
This option is not available for attribute fields of datatype 'string' (texts) but only for numerical fields.
When using classes,you can sort the values of the attributes by holding shift and click on the column header.

In case you choose 'classes', each class defines a range of attribute values. You can set each range for each class in the Min Attribute and Max attribute fields.

When using classes, attribute values are grouped into classes according to the chosen Classification Break formula :

Formula Comment
Equal Interval Calculates minimum and maximum value of the attribute and divides into the amount of classes according to the total value range
Equal Amount Counts the amount of objects and makes sure each class has the same amount of objects
Natural Uses a complex iteration to spread the objects into classes in a natural way.

You can check on the amount of objects that apply for each class by switching on the Amount flag :

Unique Values

Generates a class (row) for each unique value of the attribute field.
Warning : this may lead to hundreds of classes. It is advised to keep the amount of classes to a manageable amount.

Controlling Classes

You can add and remove classes, and switch their sequence using the Class Control buttons :

You can type in attribute values to change the ranges for each class. For example, when using the Unique Values classification technique, Orbit will create a class for each unique value in the current dataset. You may wish to prepare this legend to represent future objects as well, which may have other values than present. Simply add a class, and enter the value.

Graphic appearances

The aim of classification is to match a different graphic appearance for each class. When having unique values, unique graphic values are matched. When having classes of attribute ranges, you can match each class to a unique graphic value, or to a range of graphic values. In such case, the Min Parameter value will relate to the Min Attribute value, while the Max Parameter value will relate to the Max Attribute value. Any attribute value in between will get an interpolated value for the graphic parameter.

The parameter edit field relates to the parameter chosen. In this example, a Color is chosen so the edit fields present a colour chooser. Read how to edit Graphic Parameters on the dedicated pages.

Labelling Classes

For display purposes, you may want to assign a label to each class. Legend Displays are used in the DataSet List and on printouts.

Just type in a label for each class by clicking on the label field at the right side of each row. Use the Auto Label button to create labels based on the attribute values. Use the Clear Labels button to clear all label fields.
