Catalog

This page describes the desktop extension “Catalog” for Mapping and Reference Resources.

Concepts

What and Why

The “Catalog” provides an overview and detailed information of all references and mapping resources. It also manages the lifecycle and upload of your Reference and Mapping Resources.
The interactive combination of the map (geographical information), table (overview), and sidebar (detailed information) results in a powerful resource management tool.

Reference and Mapping Resources

“Reference Resources” are single data type resources: vector dataset, orthophoto, point cloud or reality mesh.
“Mapping Resources” combine geotagged photos with optional reference resources (except vector data)

Web Readiness

Reference and Mapping Resources require to be well-prepared to be used by “Orbit 3DM Viewer” (part of “Orbit 3DM Publisher” and “Orbit 3DM Cloud”) or “Orbit PhotoNavigation” (part of “Bentley ContextShare”).
Only Web-Ready Catalog Resources can be uploaded to “Orbit 3DM Cloud” or “Bentley ContextShare”.

Resource Metadata and Properties

Resource status, statistics, content, and properties are calculated and updated at “Review Image Availability” and “Review Data for Web Readiness”, see Catalog Context Menu.

  • Review Image Availability
For Mapping Resources only, verifies if photo positions match with image files on disk. A mismatch is reported in the Catalog Table and mismatch report files are created in the Mapping Run Metadata folder.
  • Review Data for Web Readiness
Verifies if data is ready to upload. For Mapping Resources the Image Availability check needs to be completed first.

Archived Resources

Archive resources of finished projects to keep an up-to-date and relevant overview. In other words, restrict resources to these you currently working on.
Archived resources are hidden from the Catalog and not available to open. These resources remain available if needed and can be unarchived at any time.

Adding Resources to Catalog

In “Orbit 3DM Content Manager” and “Import and Upload Tool” resources opened in Orbit are automatically added to the Catalog.
In “Orbit 3DM Feature Extraction” resources need to be added manually via the Dataset List Dataset Context Menu.

The right-hand sidebar lists detailed information of a single selected catalog resource, summarized information of multiple selected resources, and grand totals if no resource is selected.

Run / Resource

General information, last known location, and quick access to the open file location for “Available” resources.

Collection

Mapping Resource metadata that can be entered at “Import Run” and updated via “Edit Run”, see Catalog Context Menu or Import Run.

Tab, General Use

Open and View from Table

  • Filter Catalog listing using the Search Box to filter. Filtering is applied upon <Enter>.
  • Single click a table record to highlight the mobile mapping resource.
  • Double click a table record to highlight and zoom to the extent of the mobile mapping resource.
  • Open a selected Resource via the Catalog Context Menu.
The currently opened Mapping Resource is displayed in bold.
Contrary to open run or open project via procedures, the map will not zoom to the extents of the opened mobile mapping resource and, if available, trajectory information will be displayed immediately on the Map 2D. These two small differences make it possible to verify or compare the accuracy of multiple runs at the same location. Subsequently, segments can be adjusted or removed directly.

Open and View from Map

Activate the “Map Select” function using the Select-Icon from the Catalog header and hover above Map 2D.
A resource can be selected and opened if its name appears as a label on the mouse pointer. The selected resource is highlighted on Map 2D and in the catalog table.

Map Display, Catalog Preferences:

  • None
  • Listed Resources
  • Selected Resources
  • Resource name
  • Trajectory of opened Mapping Run

Catalog Context Menu

Right-click Catalog table record(s).

  • Open Edit Remove Run, see Manage Mapping Runs
  • Consolidate Run, see Consolidation
  • Georeference Run, see Georeference Data
  • Add/Remove to Delivery, see Delivery
  • Archive/Unarchive
Archive resources of finished projects to retain the current and relevant overview. In other words, restrict resources to these you currently working on.
  • Remove
The Catalog doesn't delete files on disk. Removing a resource deletes the resource record in the catalog, not the data on the disk.
  • Review Image Availability, see Catalog Context Menu
  • Review Data for Web Readiness, see Catalog Context Menu

Tab, Table Columns

Color

The display of Resource Envelope or Resource Simplified Trajectory of listed Catalog Resources.

Mapping Resource color, Catalog Preferences:

  • Unique Colors: apply colors as defined in the catalog table.
  • Orfant runs: all runs not used by any project will be colored red.
  • Status: apply colors based on the status of the run in the catalog table

Unique Color or Mapping and Reference Resources can be updated by with a single click on the color field.
Note if a resource is selected in the catalog table, the selection preference focus color will be used.

Status

Mapping Resources go through a series of steps from data collection to delivery to be used for publishing or feature extraction.
The status of your mobile mapping run is displayed by the status indicator :

  • Yellow - Imported, Added: a processed Orbit run has been added, or raw data is imported.
  • Red - In process: run contains adjustments that aren't consolidated.
  • Grey - Processed: run was processed.
  • Blue - Delivered: run was delivered.
  • Green - Exported: run is an exported segment.

Statistics

Trajecotry - Panoramas - Planars

  • Trajectory: Length of mapping trajectory
  • Panoramas/Planars#: Number of camera directories / Number of photo positions / Number of Original Images / Number of Processed Images
  • Panoramas/Planars%: Percentage Original images / Percentage of Processed Images - in ratio to photo positions
  • Point cloud: number of point cloud points (millions)

Size

  • Total Size: resource size on disk, entire resource
  • Relevant Size: resource subset size on disk that will be uploaded to Cloud, used by 3DM Viewer.

Web Ready

The Web Readiness indicator (Green/Yellow/Red) is updated by “Review Data for Web Readiness”.
To verify the completeness of Mapping Resource photo positions and photo files, the “Review Image Availability” check must be completed first.

Web Readiness indicator:

  • Red: not ready for upload
  • Yellow: accepted minor issues, ready for upload
  • Green: perfectly prepared, ready for upload

The tooltip on the Web Readiness Indicator shows the reason why the Mapping Resource is not ready for upload.
Resolve the issue and trigger again the “Review Data for Web Readiness”.

Web Ready Requirements

Reasons data is not Web Ready

  • Storage format not supported by Orbit 3DM Viewer
  • Images are not optimized into processed images
    > Run procedure “Optimize Imagery”, see Optimize Imagery.
  • Number of processed images is less than the number of photo positions. For each photo position of the Mapping Run, the corresponding optimized image must be available.
    • Not all original images are optimized into processed images
      > Run procedure “Optimize Imagery”.
    • Not all original image files are available
      > Remove the corresponding photo positions for missing processed images, Review Image Availability and run the procedure “Edit Run”
  • Mapping Resource directory (pointcloud, panorama1, planar[x], trajectory) is available but no data is available.
    > Import missing data, or
    > Delete the resource directory.

Availability

The physical availability of the resource files on disk is displayed by the green/red indicator in the “Available” field.
