Return to Overview - DEM Process

Volume Calculator

This function opens a 3D renderer as in the previous viewers, but this viewer lets you calculate volumes also. The conditions to continue are:

  • you must have a DSM available in the project
  • you must have defined a Fence (area object)
  • If these conditions are not met you will get the next dialogue:

If all conditions are met the 3D renderer will appear. The dialog shows also some extra features to calculate a volume as you can see in the next dialogue:

  • Fence
You can see in the image that the dataset called 'DTM Area', containing area objects, is selected, showing a blue line around the DTM at the right side. This is defining the vertical border to limit the volume calculation. This area object has to be selected in Orbit GIS and used to make a Fence object using the standard Orbit GIS Fence functions.

  • Ground Height
This value borders the botom of the Volume with a horizontal plane at the given height. This value could be the lowest Z value of the fence points e.g.

  • Calculate Pressing the button, the volume described by the given DTM/DSM will be calculated and displayed.

  • Show All
Pressing this button will render the DSM together with the selected datasets. You can navigate in the renderer using the standard system mouse.

  • Left mouse button pressed
Moving the mouse horizontal, will rotate the volume and datasets around a vertical axis. Moving the mouse Vertical, will rotate the volume around a horizontal axis.

  • Scroll button pressed
Moving the mouse up and down, will drag the view also away and closer to you. This has the effect of zooming in and out on the volume.
