Orbit UMP
A wizard of just five steps needs to be finished to make the flightplan that covers your area in stereophotos
Open on the main toolbar 'extensions' and choose for Orbit UAV Mapping Planner :
Step 1 : Define the project file
Three options are available:
- start a blanc project
- open an existing project (select your preferred *.ump - file)
- drag and drop an existing project in the UMP-window
Step 2 : Define the camera specifications
Two options are available:
- Set the parameters for a custom camera:
- Focal
- CCD Width (mm)
- CCD Height (mm)
- pixelsize (micron)
- Choose for an existing camera: select a camera from your camera database or import a camera from another camera database (for more information, see: camera database)
Step 3 : Define the drone or UAV specifications
- define your type of drone:
- MD4-200
- MD4-1000
- …
- set the horizontal speed for the strips in m/s
- set the horizontal speed for outside the strips in m/s
- set the vertical speed while ascending in m/s
- set the vertical speed while descending in m/s
- set the waypoint breaking
- set the vertical down angle (= the determinated and inverted Camera Pitch Angle (= CSS parameter) from your drone)
- select the yaw angle on the main flight direction (0°–90°–180°–270°)
Step 4 : Define the area to cover
- import in the OrbitGIS X Map Canvas an orthophoto or some other background material (e.g. georeferenced document or vector data) of the region you want to get in stereocoverage. You can also use the 'import from Google' extension to OrbitGIS X.
- define the main flight direction or strip orientation
- draw a construction line in the Orbit GIS mapcanvas to define this direction or orientation
- remove the flight direction to restart a new direction
- define the area that you want to cover in stereo
- draw a fence in the Orbit GIS mapcanvas to define the flight area
- add a selected area as fence to the project
- make a fence part parallel to a construction line (to add a construction line, see constructions)
- remove the fence to restart a new fence
Step 5 : Generate the stereocoverage
- define a project properties name
- set the ground height (m)
- set the altitude above the ground level (m) → the ground pixelsize (cm) will be calculated
- set the ground pixelsize (cm) → the altitude above the ground level (m) will be calculated
- set the preferred delay before and after a waypoint (these values are available for a non-continuous flight)
- set the time limit of your batteries (min) (if the given ‘Time Limit’ exceeds the calculated flight time, the flight will be splitted in different parts)
- set the overlap in a strip and between the strip (pct)
- select ‘home’ to set the lift up position of the drone for all flights that are part of the project.
- locate this position in the Orbit GIS mapcanvas
- clear to remove this position and set another one
- select ‘flight home’ if you wish to make a separate home position for each calculated flight. Take into account that indicating separate home positions for each flight just can be done after the calculation of the waypoints. To indicate a separate home position for a specific flight, the flight must be selected.
- select ‘return home’ if you like to land your drone at the end of the waypoint flight to the setted home position.
- deselect continuous flight if you want to adjust the speed before and after a waypoint
- Generate your waypoint flight: the flight will be calculated and the flight data appear in the 'flights' and 'flights details' window.
- On the Orbit GIS mapcanvas the footprints of all vertical images taken are shown. The yellow triangle shows the home position. You can get a preview in 'photo footprints', 'waypoints', or 'optimal stereo regions'.


- You can save the flight plan and the UMP project via save UMP project. The 'flight plan' or 'waypoint flight files' need to be dropped in your UAV-software. Take into account that the UMP project data is stored without the ‘waypoint flight files’. The UMP-project file can be reloaded into the UMP wizard to change flight parameters or to complete an unfinished project (see step 1 above).
