IT Requirements for Orbit Government solutions

Note : There is no special hardware required ! Just make wise choices in relation to the volume of data to be processed and the desired performance.

Java Runtime Engine

Orbit uses the Java Runtime Engine (JRE) to process graphic requests. Java should not be installed though, Orbit uses JRE which is embedded in the Orbit Installation.

Graphics card

There is no need for a dedicated Graphics card but DirectX 9 is a requirement on Windows.

Computing Power

In an Orbit Client-Server environment (Orbit CS), the Orbit server needs computing power to work and process large amounts of data easily. The requirements depend on the number of concurrent users, the amount of data and the performance expectations.

Orbit Server

  • Minimum : 64 Bit OS, 4 GB RAM, Dual-core processor(s)
  • Recommended : 64 Bit OS, 8 GB RAM or more, Quad-core processor(s) or more

A 64-Bit OS guarantees optimal use of all the available system memory

Orbit Client

  • Minimum : 32 Bit OS, 2 GB RAM, Dual-core processor(s)
  • Recommended : 64 Bit OS, 8 GB RAM or more, Quad-core processor(s) or more

OrbitGIS SA (the Standalone installation)

  • Minimum : 64-Bit OS, 1 GB RAM, Dual-core processor(s)
  • Recommended : 64-Bit OS, 4 GB RAM or more, Quad-core processor(s)

The SA installation will allocate a maximum usage of 2GB RAM after the initial installation, but it is possible to configure OrbitGIS to use more Memory to enhance it's performance. Look here for instructions on how to improve the memory usage.

Operating System

  • Windows

Any of the Windows server environments are supported. Windows 7 is also supported but limits the number of simultaneous connections to 20. Older versions are supported but are not to be preferred

Disk Space

A standard installation will require at least 100GB free disk space. Depending on the number of data more disk space will be required. For an optimal usage of Orbit, we recommend to use a dedicated disk with at least 250 GB.

It is preferred to NOT install Orbit CS or OrbitGIS SA on the C-drive (or a disk where an OS is installed). An OS may compromise the disk space.

Network Connection

(*Not applicable for OrbitGIS Standalone) Since Orbit CS will be installed on one single server computer and clients will open the application from the server, it is important to have a solid network connection between Orbit Clients, the Orbit EOS Server and, if applicable, the data server.
At least a 1 Gbps network-connection is required to have a desirable performance.

Be attentive to the units of network speed :

Network speed Copy time
Units Gigabit per second Megabit per second Kilobit per second kilobytes per second file of 500 kB file of 1 MB
or 1024 kB
Gbit/s, Gb/s, Gbps Mbit/s, Mb/s, Mbps kbit/s, kb/s, kbps kB
