Multiresolution Image data

A multiresolution image is a type of multi-scale representation, in which an image is subject to repeated scaling. With a multiresolution format, large raster image files such as aerial photographs or satellite imagery are compressed and can be quickly viewed without having to decompress the entire file. Depending on the zoom level, an image will be represented at different scales.

Compression Orbit's proprietory OMI format uses a compression technique of your choice, e.g. JP2. Multiresolution and tiling is encoded for maximum performance and platform independance. The compression rate is slightly less that MrSID or ECW, but performance is higher. OMI supports black&white, greyscale and RGB imagery. MrSID technology uses lossless wavelet compression to create an initial image. Only applicable for color imagery. The ECW technology is similar to MrSID but generally conceived as superior. Only applicable for color imagery.
Platform supported All Java platforms Only supported on Windows.
The proprietory decoder is a Microsoft Windows based *.dll that comes with your Orbit X installation. This engine is only available on Microsoft platforms (until further notice from the manufacturer) and Orbit can therefore not support it on other platforms.
Only supported on Windows.
To support ECW images, Orbit implements a proprietory decoder. This decodes is available on several platforms, but Orbit X currently supports only the Windows version.
