Map Statusbar
At the bottom of the MapCanvas the MapCanvas Statusbar is displayed. This toolbar displays the current MapCanvas properties:
- Activated Orbit GIS Function
- Coordinate Reference System of the MapCanvas
- Scale
- Coordinates of the cursor position in the current Coordinate Reference System
1. Activated Function
Left of the MapCanvas Statusbar, the current activated function on the MapCanvas is shown.
The activated function is also apparent in the appearance of the cursor above the MapCanvas.
2. MapCanvas Coordinate Reference System
The MapCanavas CRS can be changed quickly via the Set Coordinate Reference System Window which one opens with a single click on the current MapCanvas CRS in the middle of the MapCanvas Statusbar.
The MapCanvas CRS is the coordinate system that will be used as display coordinate system for all your listed datasets. If required datasets will be re-projected on the fly to be displayed on the MapCanvas.
But make a wise decision :
- It will require processing power to reproject large vector datasets into another MapCanvas CRS. It is advised to use the CRS of the largest vector dataset or combination of datasets as MapCanvas CRS. This will reduce re-projection calculations and will speed up map rendering considerably.
- Re-projecting means deforming. To retain your familiar “projection shapes” use again the same CRS for your MapCanavas as defined for your datastets.
The MapCanvas CRS will follow automatically the CRS of the first checked / displayed dataset with a defined CRS.
The MapCanvas CRS will be saved in the workspace :
- Orbit Standalone : Orbit GIS Workspace file
- Orbit Client Server : Workspaces

3. Set to Scale
A single click on the current Scale in the middle of the Statusbar opens the pop-up Window Set to Scale.
It is possible to select a preset scale or to enter a random scale.
Remark Unity of Scale
The unity of the scale is linked to the used Coordinate Reference System. There are two distinct types of Coordinate Reference Systems :
- Projected Coordinate Systems : metric scale units
- Spherical Coordinate Systems : scale units in degrees
Remark Scale references of raster datasets
When using digital maps, beware of the data specification towards references of scale. A map created to be used at 1/100.000 can easily be zoomed in to 1/5.000, however lacking precision quality and content relevant for such scale. Be careful when interpreting maps at scales larger than intended by the provider.
4. Coordinate Display
A single click on the current Coordinate Reference System Coordinates at the right of the Statusbar opens the Coordinate Display Window.
The Coordinate Display Window shows dynamically the World Geodetic System and the Geographic Coordinates of cursor position.
The Coordinates of the current Coordinate Reference System are shown in the Statusbar itself.
